The causes of war have been largely overlooked in the field of International Relations. Despite being a significant topic, theories in this field only briefly address it, and many scholars only recognize this gap in knowledge when it is pointed out to them. While it is generally understood what may motivate states to go to war, defining these aims is seen as futile. This article aims to demonstrate how various causes of violence and war, including competition over resources and reproduction, the desire for dominance, security concerns, and issues related to kinship, identity, and ideas, can be understood within a larger framework of evolved human motivations. These causes, some of which have been identified by different schools of thought within IR theory, especially realism, are interconnected and shaped by evolution and natural selection.
